There are three basic types of product listings, each with their own distinct use:
These products are straightforward and do not have variations. They are standalone items that don’t require any additional details, such as size or color options. For example, if you’re adding a ceramic coffee mug to your store, it would be considered a simple product since it doesn’t come in multiple sizes or designs.
A type of simple product, downloadable and virtual products are intangible items that you can offer online. These products don’t require physical shipping and can include items like eBooks, software, music files, or online courses. They’re perfect for instant delivery and provide your customers with convenient, on-demand access.
Another type of simple product, simple subscription let’s you offer recurring payment plans for a single subscription option, charging your customers at fixed times (e.g., monthly) without variations in pricing or features. This is ideal for straightforward subscription-based products or services with a consistent cost and billing cycle.
A variable product is an item that comes in multiple variations. For example, if you’re selling a dress, you can offer it in different colors and sizes. This option allows you to create and manage variations based on your preferences, such as material, stitching style, or any other attributes relevant to your product.
A variable subscription product let’s you create subscription-based products with multiple variations, allowing different pricing, billing periods, and features for each option. This is useful for offering tiered subscription plans, customizable service levels, or product variations with their own recurring payment structures.
While not a standalone product type, grouped product let’s you sell a parent product (set up with the grouped product type) with different related products. For example, if you want to sell a music album along with individual tracks and visuals, you’ll need to create a grouped product. This allows you to bundle the full album with its individual components, giving your customers the flexibility to purchase the entire collection or select specific items separately.
